Blackberry Moscow Mule | Perfect Drink for Fall

blackberry Moscow muleYou may think of a blackberry Moscow mule as a refreshing summer beverage. And it is. But that’s assuming you have your blackberry syrup from the previous year’s crop. I have been on a Moscow mule kick and since I had a ton of blackberries from blackberry picking this year, I thought I would try a recipe of my own using those precious, delicious blackberries. It’s Fall now and I am still enjoying the fruits of my labor (see what I did there?). Moscow mules are generally pretty easy to make. Ginger beer (I prefer Fever Tree)* is a must-have, along with your copper mugs. Why should I use a copper mug? I also like the fun paper striped straws too.

First you need to make your blackberry syrup, which is super easy. I make a lot at one time and then store it in the Frappuccino bottles that Jake saves for me, so I have it whenever I need it. The recipe I am giving you is just a basic recipe, but feel free to double or even triple if you need to.

Blackberry Syrup
6 oz blackberries
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and smoosh the blackberries with your spoon while the syrup is heating up. Put on medium/high heat, stirring often.  When mixture is starting to come to a boil, continue stirring for several minutes, and notice your mixture should be thickening up a little. You may need to add a little more water or sugar, depending on how thick your syrup is and also how sweet you want your syrup to be. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes. Run through a very fine strainer. Store in airtight container.

Some recipes say you can blend all three ingredients in your food processor and then skip the straining step. The blackberries that I pick at my aunt and uncle’s farm are HUGE. And that also means they have HUGE seeds. I don’t want to have that much seed in my syrup, so I choose to it another way, where I can easily strain the seeds out completely.

And now for the really good part.
