How to Paint Your Concrete Porch in One Weekend

Do you have a concrete slab porch but dream of sitting pretty, Southern-style with a glass of tea to one side and a good book on the other? Me, too, friend. Me, too.

No worries, friend. We’re going to make that dream come true! You know, you can paint your concrete slab porch and add some personality! Best of all, it’s easy and inexpensive.

I chose a gray and white stripe because it was playful but classic. I love the character it added to this space and after a year full of sun exposure, rain and snow, it still looks great. Here’s what you’ll need to get the look:

Let's Make it Happen

*I apologize I don’t shots of this process. I cannot find them anywhere but wanted to get this tutorial up since I get so many questions about the process. If a step doesn’t make sense, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Before you apply the Fast Prep, spray the porch with water and be careful not to create puddles.

Using the garden sprayer, apply the Fast Prep to the concrete. Use the your stiff-bristled brush to spread the Fast Prep over the entire surface. It should begin to fizz or bubble. Fizzing is good! That means it is working. Scrub the surface with the brush to wash away any dirt or grease.

Stripes Painted on Concrete Slab Porch

When you feel satisfied with the area, rinse the Fast Prep residue away and allow the concrete to dry completely. We took care of this step early Saturday morning so I’d be ready to paint that afternoon.

Once the concrete is dry, use a roller to apply Valspar Concrete Bonding Primer to the entire surface. If you’re painting on a nice, warm day, the primer will be dry and ready to paint within a few hours.

The number and size of stripes will depend on the size of your porch. Each of my sections ended up about 12 inches wide. I started with the lighter gray so that the darker color would look like an accent. As you’re taping off your sections, make sure you mark the sections you’ll paint with the darker color because it does get a little confusing. I just added an “X” to the sections that would be painted in Lazy River.

Once you have the space taped off, simply roll the paint out in each section. I did two coats of each color, which gave me a pretty, saturated look.

In terms of maintenance, I just sweep the porch once a week or so and scrub it with the bristle brush as needed. Super-easy and it made a huge difference!
