Creating Mood Boards

Creating a mood board is fun and easy. It’s a great way to get creative and explore all your ideas in one place. A mood board is essentially an arrangement of images, colors, fonts, and other elements that capture the overall feel or concept behind your project. I even like to use images of fabrics, even if it’s not necessarily a mood board for a tangible project (like Our Storied Home).

This is the mood board I made recently for Our Storied Home’s upcoming fall relaunch. It really does help me to have a visual to refer to when I’m trying to “keep the vibe” I want.

Technology has made it easy to create mood boards. There are numerous ways to do so. There are apps like Freeform (for Apple products) and Evernote that help you create mood boards digitally and sites like Canva have pre-designed templates you can simply drop in images and text. Then there’s also the “old-fashioned” way to make a mood board — actually cut images from magazines, print them out and attach them to a foam board. Some people like to actually feel fabrics and have that physical product in front of them to help get the creative juices flowing.

You can use it to create visual inspiration for a design project or to help you narrow down decisions for something like event decor, clothing styling, home decorating, etc. You can even use it to tell stories or express emotions. I use them to design my websites and other work related projects. The possibilities are endless! With a mood board as your guide, you’ll have a better idea of how everything needs to come together so that you can make informed decisions throughout the process.

Creating a mood board is not only fun, but it really helps organize your brain and helps keep you focused on the look and feel of your project. No matter which method you choose to use, have fun with it!
